Why Grow Native Plants?
There are many benefits to gardening with native plants:
locally native plants are already well adapted to climate and soil conditions, often requiring little maintenance once established
native plants are often resistant to diseases that exotic plants are susceptible to
a large variety of native plants are drought tolerant or require low water use in general - native gardens can be designed to require little or no supplemental watering once established
native plants support native wildlife, including pollinators, other insects, birds, mammals, and soil fungal communities
there are many native wildflowers with showy flowers suitable for ornamental planting, as well as native trees and shrubs that can be grown in ornamental forms or as hedges (e.g., vine maple, rhododendron, evergreen huckleberry, red cedar, etc.)
a variety of native plant foods are easy to garden with, such as trailing blackberry, thimbleberry, huckleberry, and bilberry, as well as plants that can be used as salad greens
gardening with native plants is a great way to learn how to identify plants growing in parks, forests, and other open space areas
some native plants can be produced at lower cost than similar exotic species
